An addendum: rather than dealing with the 80 minute issue, why don't we just say, you have 20 songs and 1 desert island: Go. I don't want to be checking your run-times, holmes.

I tried to have a couple songs in each of my major listening categories: rock, dance, love returned/unrequited, mope, celebratory.
There were a lot of bands whose work I dig as a whole, but whose catalog was not conducive to one song over others. Thus, Zeppelin, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Elliott Smith, Rolling Stones, James Brown, The Who, etc. didn't make the cut.
Almost made it, and didn't because of the split: The Who: Mobile or Bargain Soundgarden: Fell on Black Days or Rusty Cage Smashing Pumpkins: Hummer or Geek USA James Brown: Sex Machine or Papa's Got a Brand New Bag Led Zeppelin: Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You or Heartbreaker Elliott Smith: Between the Bars or Say Yes
I wanted upbeat, dancy things, things I can recall or remember, but things that have a particular resonance when I hear these particular versions. That and I have a narrow groove, I think, of what I like.
So something I can clearly recall or even sing to myself were automatically out. You other fellows have the benefit of being musically inclined, and could therefore make your own music if you were stuck on said island.
Case in point, I can remember all the words to Bring It On Home, but nothing beats hearing Cooke's voice; it is the epitome of soul and that song...damn. It just melts me.
Many of the songs on my list are there for that reason. I also steered clear of the sadder ones, in favor of one of *the* saddest ones. Maybe I'd end up regretting the thrown-together, rather narrow breadth of this collection, but I think each of these songs has remained intriguing for me for a long time, and that's why some of them got a call up.
