I think there are two mortal locks here: Raging Bull and Do the Right Thing. Scorsese's film starts the decade off and Lee's film ends it. Both are brutal in their specific ways, the former in a manner that is more personal and the latter in one more political. I'm suprised you didn't have DTRT. HAS to be there.


Here are our choices here:

1) Sci-fi/fantasy: ET and Blade Runner, two films that came out at the same time in 1982...I guess this excludes Brazil, though I would consider it for the Honorable Mention. I think the impact of Gilliam's fight over the film was important, and the film is pretty amazing, still my favorite of his.

2) David Lynch films: the art house or the more mainstream flick. I go with Blue Velvet here. We could have a debate about whether EM is better or not, but there's no doubt that in the public consciousness Lynch is remembered as the director of Blue Velvet. This is the formula that spawned a thousand Lynch shows and films. It stays.

3) Alright, so Raiders of the Lost Ark is a lock. But here's my point: if we take RotLA, then we have to axe ET and go with Blade Runner.
